HAIR TRANSPLANT

It's a type of surgery that moves hair you already have to fill an area with thin or no hair. Doctors have been doing these transplants in the U.S. since the 1950s, but techniques have changed a lot in recent years.

Types of Hair Transplant

  • Follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS)
  • Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

Procedure

Pre-operative assessment and planning

  • Initial Consultation and Analyze the  patient's scalp, discusses their preferences and expectations
  • Advice the best approach

Transplant Operations

  • Local anesthesia and mild sedation given to patient.
  • Hairs are shampooed and then treated with an antibacterial agent prior to the donor scalp being harvested using different methods.
  • Then hairs are transplanted using FUSS or FUE methods.

Post-operative Care

  • The vulnerable recipient area must be shielded from the sun, and shampooing is started two days after the surgery.
  • During the first ten days, virtually all of the transplanted hairs, inevitably traumatized by their relocation, will fall out. This is referred to as "shock loss".
  • After two to three months new hair will begin to grow from the moved follicles.

Advantages of hair transplantation

  • With hair at your disposal, you can choose not having one out of place.
  • The hair implanted or grafted will continue with its growth.
  • The fact that you yourself are the donor is also one of its pros.
  • Unless you have opted for too many transplants, the process is by and large simple and desired result can be obtained in one go.
  • Mostly little or no money is taken as consultation fee, so bearing in mind its everlasting effect the process is pretty much cost effective.
  • Hair transplantation is far more cost effective.
  • The operation is safe in the sense; you need not be brought under complete anesthesia.
  • While the issues of pain may be duly addressed by localized sedation, you need not be anxious about total lapse of consciousness.
  • One of the scientific advantages of hair transplantation relates to its uniformity of distribution. The technique is worked upon with optimization in such a way that your overall follicular distribution remains intact.

Disadvantages of hair transplantation

  • Follicles tend to become more vulnerable in cases where a sizeable portion is removed.
  • Cases involving dense packing tend to become more costly and time taking- calling for more than one session.
  • Cases involving thick packing can lead to scarring and injuries.
  • Due to injury and exposure to certain medications, graft planted may not survive resulting in the wastage of both time & money.
